The story of how a Crocodile appears in Petrograd and frightens the inhabitants of the city. The little boy Vanya Vasilchikov is not afraid of him. The crocodile turns out to be not scary and makes friends with Vanya.

It is the summer holiday and little Mísa Horák has taken a few animals from the school's so-called "Corner of Living Nature" home to care for. But when he brings home two Angora rabbits, a starling, a little monkey, a tortoise and a small crocodile, his parents order him to take them away. He is helped by Káta, who offers to place the animals in the child's room of her family's apartment. Mísa leaves for her friend where the animals will hopefully be able to stay. Káta goes shopping. In the meantime, Káta's younger sister Minka wakes up and begins to play with the animals, who gradually run off in disarray.

Vanya doesn't know his father. His mother says he works in Moscow. With friend Fedya, Vanya meets Viktor, his mother's former classmate who lived in Germany, wondering if he's Vanya's dad as they prepare to search for him in Moscow.

Vanya and his stepsister Sonia have lived their entire lives in their family's farmhouse. While they stayed home to take care of their ailing parents, their sister Masha has been gallivanting around the world as a successful actress and movie star, leaving Vanya and Sonia to feel trapped and regretful. A retired professor returns to his estate with his beautiful young wife Yelena. The estate originally belonged to his now-deceased first wife; her mother and brother still live there and manage the farm. For many years the brother (Uncle Vanya) has sent the farm's proceeds to the professor, while receiving only a small salary himself. The professor's daughter Sonya, who is about the same age as his new wife, also lives on the estate. The professor is pompous, vain, and irritable, and calls Dr. Astrov to treat his gout, then sends him away without seeing him. Astrov is an experienced physician who performs his job conscientiously, but has lost all idealism and spends much of his time drinking. Yelena's presence introduces a bit of sexual tension into the household: Astrov and Uncle Vanya fall in love with her and she spurns them both.
